Greetings and Welcome

By PUSD Parents Group

PUSD Parents Group (PPG) is a fast emerging citizen group passionate about our students, teachers, and stakeholders that contribute to high quality results in the Poway Unified School District. We welcome all PUSD stakeholders within the community.

PPG emerged in late April as a dozen grass-root parents became concerned about the school district’s fiscal sustainability after reviewing PUSD’s annual financial audits. We have grown to more than three hundred strong members and continue to grow.

We read Board of Education meeting agendas online, as well as other reports. Our members make public comments at both regular and special PUSD Board Meetings, as well as provide PPG reports to school board members and district management. We also address issues and concerns with individual board members, along with administration officials in an effort to ensure an improved and sustainable future for the school district.

If you love PUSD as much as we do, please join us ( ).

Keeping PUSD Fiscal House in Order (I)

Urging an End to Year-after-Year Deficit Spending and Encouraging a Balanced Budget

The current focus of PPG is to follow attentively the important aspects of PUSD financing and urge the district administration to balance the budget. We were shocked to find out the PUSD had deficits four years in a row since the 2011-2012 school year. Reserve funds have eroded significantly, district liability has escalated and PUSD’s credit rating has been downgraded. This deficit spending is fiscally unsustainable. As concerned parents, we launched a strong campaign in May 2015 urging fiscal responsibility.

While we could not stop the administration’s decision to deficit spend over $20 million in the 2014-2015 school year, we were pleased that the district will finally have a balanced budget for this coming 2015-2016 school year. Since PPG loudly and clearly urged the PUSD administration to stop deficit spending, the Associate Superintendent of Business was “excited to present a balanced, non-deficit” budget for the 2015- 2016 school year at the June Board of Education Meeting.

However, we need to continue monitoring our school district’s budget planning because the projections for 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 again anticipate deficits. If more parents and community members give attention to PUSD’s fiscal problems, PPG believes that together we can stop deficit spending and start to regain a solid financial ground.
